Horses of Hope—Inspiring Stories of Healing
After 20 years as a Veterinarian, I have seen many horses that were at death’s door that, by all medical considerations, should have died, but miraculously survived. In light of the Christmas Season, I would like to share one of these miraculous recoveries and ask you to share your story if you have experienced a miracle like this.
I was called out on an emergency to examine a mare that had gotten into a bucket of Daily Wormer and ate about 40 lbs of the wormer. That's over 10 times the lethal dose! She had a Heart Rate of 100 bpm. She was so weak and trembling so violently, that she could only stand for 2-3 minutes at a time.
Despite treatment, she deteriorated rapidly over the next hour to a point where she could no longer stand at all and was clearly dying. The owners were heartbroken, especially because this was the beloved horse of their teenage daughter. They asked me to wait to euthanize the horse until they could get their daughter home from school to say goodbye. I was afraid the horse wouldn’t last that long as she was struggling even to breathe.
The daughter arrived, crying uncontrollably. She draped herself over her beloved horse, hugging her, sobbing, and praying over her. Within 10 minutes that dying horse got up, started to eat, and appeared completely normal! It's moments like these that leave me in awe of the bond between horse and owner and grateful for a God who will sometimes honor that love with a miracle. I feel especially privileged to be a vet when I have a chance to witness such a moment.
